Mission Statement

Although addiction treatment resources are widely available in Pennsylvania, access can be difficult, complicated, cumbersome and sometimes life endangering. Families and clients currently lack advocacy in addressing the cost and difficulties of accessing healthcare coverage. Family Advocacy for Addiction Treatment seeks to remedy the problem of needless barriers to existing treatment resources.

Is drug or alcohol addiction affecting you or a family member?
Are cost issues a barrier to treatment?
Has your insurance company denied benefits for treatment?
No insurance – and you don’t know where to turn for help?

ACCESS FAMILY ADVOCACY FOR ADDICTION TREATMENT
can assist you with overcoming the cost barriers to drug and alcohol treatment.

KNOW YOUR INSURANCE RIGHTS!

PA Act 106 of 1989 requires most group health insurance plans to cover drug & alcohol addiction treatment. The minimum mandated coverage includes:

  • Up to 7 days detox per admission – 4 admissions per lifetime
  • Minimum of 30 days rehab per year – 90 days per lifetime(non-hospital residential)
  • Minimum 30 units of outpatient treatment per year – 120 units per lifetime
  • Plus 15 additional rehab days (inpatient) or 30 days additional outpatient units – or a combination (1 inpatient day = 2 outpatient units.)

All that is required for treatment is certification and referral by a physician or psychologist.

DID YOU KNOW…

Addiction treatment, when tailored to the needs of the individual, can be as effective as treatments for other illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma.

About 92,000 Pennsylvanians entered treatment for alcohol and drug addictions during fiscal year 2005-06. However, the Department of Health estimates that over 941,500 residents of our state are in need of this service.
